Braunston News

Remembrance

Some of the older Braunston residents may remember the Hinman family. Maurice Hinman died in August this year aged 90. He was the son of Robert and Caroline Hinman who lived at 11, Cedar Street, Braunston. When Maurice married he was working for Philip Walker, he and his wife Evelyn lived at Church Farm Cottage, Brooke where their eldest daughter was born.…

Ride and Stride

Ride and Stride plays a vital part in the preservation of our many churches. Since both riding and striding is well beyond Meg and I we sat in the seats of welcome and refreshment at All Saints. The door was open in welcome, but certainly produced conditions that got progressively colder. Rain played a part in ensuring that many got quite wet…

Memories

Memories, Sunday 22nd October at 4:00pm at All Saints Braunston will be a service of quietness and reflection in memory of those we have known and loved and for peace in our world. Please come and share this time with us, everyone is welcome.

Bats

Bats in the church roof are fine. Bats in the body of the church damage our building, get close to preventing worship and create an enormous amount of hard work protecting our walls and cleaning on a daily basis. The work and the battle have been fought for some years but now the possibility of an ‘accommodation’ of bats and people is…

Braunston to Bangladesh

Last autumn Kim White left Braunston to spend three months in Bangladesh as a volunteer worker with YCare International. A couple of weeks ago Kim came to give us an illustrated talk about her time there. She spoke to us about the practical work which her group had undertaken such as repairing a broken bridge and putting a floor down in the…

Braunston’s Big Breakfast

Thanks to the inspiration of Sue Willetts, All Saints’ Braunston decided to have a change in the way we supported the annual Christian Aid Appeal, which this year was to help refugees. Instead of a door to door collection, everyone in the village was invited to a free breakfast in the village hall on Saturday May 20, with donations going to Christian…

Our New Curates

We welcome two new curates this month. Both are being ordained Deacon starting out on the two years leading to full Ordination. They are being ordained as Deacons on Sunday 25th June at Peterborough Cathedral. At 11am. We have no morning service on that day and some of us might well feel able to be part of the supporting congregation. In the…

The Midsummer Ceilidh – 24th June

This features the James Joyce Band and promises fun for everyone regardless of experience. In the Village Hall from 7:00pm. Tickets which include a hot supper are at £12 and there is a bar. A Successful May Fayre

May Fayres are almost a way of life since the end of one year leads fairly rapidly to thoughts about the next. They are, in essence, a genuine and well planned and organised team effort. It is therefore a delight when everything goes well and large crowds have had a great day. Massive thanks go to the people who came and supported…

Big Brekkie

We all know the appalling human problems in so many different parts of the world and Peter Townsend drew our attention to the need to show we care through our support of Christian Aid. In Braunston we have the bonus of a big breakfast in the Village Hall on Saturday 20th of May from 8.30am as an enjoyable and delightful context in…

The May Fayre

Friends from everywhere will visit the village on Bank Holiday Monday giving us a glorious opportunity to raise money for the Village Hall the Church and Dove Cottage Day Hospice. It is always a team effort which everyone can support by finding something to do in the day. (Contact Mike or Tamsin to find out what is needed and make an offer)…

Lent and Water Aid

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the Lent Collections for Water Aid. New water connections for communities in Africa and India are crucial to improving their way of life and their hygiene. Each one costs an average of £25 and we have collected £300 therefore reaching our target of 12 new connections.

Easter in Church

We are very appreciative of the effort that all the flower arrangers make throughout the year. They make a special effort for Easter and within that effort are the Easter Lillies. Lynn Cooper collects to meet the cost of these. If you would like to contribute, everyone who is in church for Easter Sunday or comes in to appreciate the church will…

May Fayre

Monday May 1st – it doesn’t happen very often that the May Fayre is actually on May Day and it is a time when the whole village has its own fun but also works hard to ensure there are opportunities for fun and a day of pleasure for the many who will come and join us. Make sure the date is in your…

Lent Appeal for Water Aid

Thanks to the generosity of givers we are on target for our Water Aid effort – we have a target of at least 12 village water connections. Last year we achieved 15 and determined always to reach even more we are hoping for 16 this year. The Little Red Bucket will be in church every Sunday up to and including Easter Day.…

All Saints Braunston APCM

Being informed of what All Saints Braunston has done, being aware of what is planned and participating in the work of the church should be of interest to all in the parish and or on the Electoral Roll. Why not come along to the meeting in the Village Hall on Tuesday April 25th at 7.30pm. No prior notice is necessary – just…

Lent Giving

Our approach to Lent should be a positive one-give something up by all means, if that is your choice, but think about using the proceeds of that as part of caring for others. Our approach in Braunston, for many years, has been to raise funds for Water Aid through the ‘Little Red Bucket’ which will be at every service during Lent and…

Lent Course

You forgot to sign in? You can’t attend them all? Doesn’t matter, come and join the group at the home of Rob and Pat Anderson at 7:30pm on Monday evenings in Lent. The details of the nature of the course are here.

Village Historical Calendar

May I thank everyone who supported the sales of the village historical calendar, and the generous donations and sponsors which I received. I am delighted to report a magnificent total of in excess of £1900! As a result the local air ambulance will receive £500, and just over £700 each will be given to Braunston Church and the Village Hall. A huge…

Lent and our Giving

Lent is a time when many of us give up something for Lent. The real basis for that is that what we save in doing so can be part of our charitable activities. For many years now we have collected throughout Lent up to, and including Easter Day for WATERAID. We start again on the First Sunday in Lent and “the little…

Sing Sunday

We all want to sing the old familiar hymns to their traditional tunes and Sing Sunday is an opportunity to come and do that. There is also the challenge to tackle some of the tremendous number of new hymns and worship songs which we hear on Songs of Praise and in other churches. These we practice first and then knit all of…

Christmas in Braunston

I hope you’ve all had a joyful and festive Christmas and are also rested enough to step forward into the New Year. Christmas in Braunston began with our Carols by Candlelight. The church looked beautiful lit by candles and Christmas tree lights. Thank you to all who made the church look so lovely, the readers and everyone who came to join us.…

Happy Christmas

A very happy and joyous Christmas and New Year to everyone, and a very big thank you to all who have contributed to the work of our church and to its activities during this year. Journey to Jesus 2016: This year the angels play a leading role in our Travelling Nativity Play. We’d like to have as many ‘angelic singers’ as possible,…
